There are many benefits to playing squash. First, it is a fast paced workout that will truly work all of your muscle groups and mind. With an estimated output of over 1,000 calories burned per match, squash is a much better workout than running or biking. Forbes.com recently classified it as the healthiest sport to play.
More than just a great work out! Squash is a family friendly activity that can get the whole family involved. Regardless of age, people around the world are enjoying the workout, competition, and friendships developed through squash. We're hoping to build an inclusive community of all ages focused on promoting the game in West Michigan.
Collegiate squash is a growing sport and many universities beyond the North East are adding squash clubs and varsity teams (The University of Michigan Squash Club started in 2018). While squash scholarships are hard to come by, there is an ever growing number of junior and collegiate players at all levels of competition. Due to the intense nature of the game, squash players enjoy a unique camaraderie and find numerous ways in which to entertain themselves on and off the court.
Because of the enclosed nature of the sport, you can play squash year-round without much need for large and elaborate facilities. By yourself, against another person, or on a team, squash can get kids of all ages active and engaged in healthy competition. Because of the facilities needed and relatively low level of equipment needed (racquet, ball, non marking shoes, and eye protection), squash has a relatively low barrier to entry compared to other sports.
Most importantly, its just fun! You can get out on a court and spend 45-50 minutes challenging yourself, keeping your body in shape, honing your mind, and getting some stress relief driving that ball into the wall.
